My “Pan American Unity” mural is in keeping with my own journey and perception of the common history that we share with North and South America. It was very rewarding to engage in the entire process of making the large sketch, figuring out the layout of the blocks, carving each block, printing, and finally attaching each print to the backing and sewing the edges. The finished piece required 10 (30″ x 24″) carved blocks to be printed onto muslin, and sewn together. It was completed during the pandemic and shown at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque. I based the composition on a mural by Diego Rivera but I used contemporary women activists and local artists and artisans in place of his Founding Father figures and generic artisans.
